" What should we wear?" Is the most common question I get for all my sessions including newborn sessions. Here are some tips on what to wear and what to avoid when you are getting your family ready for your newborn session.
1. Color: Think about where these photos will hang. Choose a color scheme that will compliment the area of your home where the photos will hang. Commonly these photos will hang in the nursery. We usually plan the color scheme to compliment the nursery decor, living room, or staircase area of the home. Neutrals are of course a great option. I love light gray, cream, white and chambray or light blue and even navy. Something to avoid is flat white. White can be wonderful if it is paired with a texture. Think eyelet lace, knit, or other texture to add depth to the white.
These brothers look adorable in gray. The three button detail on their heather gray t-shirts elevates this simple and comfortable wardrobe choice.
Cream, of course, is a classic. These dresses are perfect with layers and lace details. Let me know if you would like to use these dresses to style your littles. These dresses are part of the Wigglebug Dress Collection.
This mom is wearing white with a bit of texture.
2. Comfort: Choose comfortable clothes that you feel confident in . If that means choosing a darker color for you I recommend navy over black. Avoid long necklaces that the baby will most likely cover up anyway.
Mom looks beautiful in this navy dress with floral pattern. The girls also look great with the lace texture adding dimension to their dresses. Dad is perfect with the muted blue color.
3. Avoid large logos, words, or pictures on your clothing. We want to keep the focus on the baby and your sweet family. Choose mostly plain, neutral, clothing with a bit of pattern or texture for interest.
This family kept it simple and soft. The gray, light blue, and white color scheme is a soft classic.
4. Change of clothes: You will want to keep in mind that it will be warm in the studio. If you want to wear long sleeves in the studio bring something cooler to change into. Also, there is a chance the baby might have an accident so bring an outfit to change into after the session just in case.
Long sleeves can look great! Just remember to bring something cooler to change into after the family photos.
5. Don't worry about shoes. Your feet will not show in these photos. If the baby has older siblings, I prefer they be barefoot for the session anyway.
Dad is the element that ties this family together. His choice of aqua shirt and gray vest both coordinates and elevates this photo! Way to go dad!
In this photo mom's dress is bringing together this color scheme. The dress ties together the different blues her boys are wearing.
6. Darker colors are very popular. Think about the tone and style of your family. Think about where these photos will hang. Here are some examples of darker color schemes.
7. Details: You can keep it simple with a t-shirt for dad and the boys but add the two or three button Henley type t-shirt to elevate the look. Avoid a white polo especially if we will be outside. Flat white will reflect the light and take away attention from the baby. A sweater or waffle texture with two button style shirt can add the detail you need. A solid color oxford button up is also a great choice for dad.
8: Classic: This color scheme is one that family's choose over and over. Muted rose, light blue/ chambray, and cream with lace. This is a great way to keep it classic but add in more color than an all neutral wardrobe.
9: Coordinate: Avoid putting everyone in one color and one style of shirt. Instead of 3 gray polos choose a gray Henley, a gray two button t-shirt and a gray oxford. You can stick with one color if you like but change up the style.
10. Don't worry about what the baby will wear! In fact I do not recommend bringing clothes for the baby at all. I have wraps available in the studio to coordinate with any color scheme. In fact if I do not have the color you want, I will add it to my collection for you! I have several shades of color as well as a variety of textures waiting in the studio. We will choose the baby's wrap when you arrive and coordinate it with the wardrobe you have chosen.
